Wolmer’s coach pleased with noticeable improvement
One of the most improved teams on the male side at the recent ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships was Wolmer’s Boys’ School.
The team from Heroes Circle made significant progress from the previous year, moving up from sixth place with 66.75 points to fifth this time around with 105 points.
Head coach Orville Brown was impressed with the team’s showing, especially in the lower classes, and explained the reasons for the improvement.
“Over the past two to three years we have been struggling with changes in coaching staff. We had two changes this year, including the very experienced John Mair. We sat down and discussed how we can put in a more solid programme, and the results have paid off,” said the veteran coach.
“We looked at how we could re-energise the programme based on what David Riley and Stephen Francis did in the past,” he added.
Wolmer’s were outstanding in Class Three.
“We had solid performances in Class Three, where Ajani Lumley and Joshua McWilliams finished 1-2 in the 200m; both helped pilot the 4x100m relay team to victory in an impressive performance. In addition, we had Mario Ross finishing fourth in Class Two 100m and third in the 200m,” said Brown.
Lumley’s winning time in the 200m was 20.72 seconds, with McWilliams second in 20.81. In the 200m, Lumley clocked 22.20, while McWilliams posted 22.41. The Class Three 4x100m team recorded an impressive 42.70 seconds for the win. Ross finished fourth in the Class Two 100m in 10.47s and third in the 200m in 21.56s, while the Class Two 4x100m relay team placed fourth in 41.06s.
With a solid base now established, Brown is confident his team can continue to improve.
“It was indeed a big gain for us in one year, and with a solid base to build on, we are looking forward to even greater improvement going forward. Now we are back in the 100-point range, we are hoping to get over the 200-point mark soon,” Brown said.
