OAS backs new constitution for Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (CMC):

The Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, says the hemispheric body is supportive of efforts to establish a new constitution for the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.

Almagro left here on Tuesday after holding talks with President Jovenel Moise, who is under pressure to step down from office amid allegations of corruption. Moise, who came to power in 2017, has denied the allegations and is instead pushing for the establishment of a government of national unity.

The opposition political parties, which have been staging violent street demonstrations, have dismissed Moise’s position, insisting that he needs to step down.
