NEW YORK (CMC):

A Guyana national is among 38 non-citizens arrested in New York on Friday by the United States Customs and Immigration Enforcement agency (ICE) for criminal activity.

A statement for the agency said the 55-year-old was “convicted by the United States Court in the Eastern District of New York of felony use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire”.

A 40-year-old citizen of the Dominican Republic, who was previously removed from the United States, was also arrested and “convicted by the United States Court in the Southern District of New York of an aggravated felony, conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine”.

The statement from ICE said the arrestees were “determined to be a threat to national security, public safety, or border security”.

Meanwhile, ICE says it has deported an undisclosed number of individuals and families to Haiti, Jamaica, Central America, Ecuador, and Peru.

“... individuals who lack a lawful basis to stay in the United States are ordered removed, consistent with US law - all individuals who are removed have been screened for protection concerns,” said ICE in a statement.

“This policy applies to all non-citizens, regardless of nationality, to ensure the orderly and humane processing, transfer, and removal of single adults, family units, and others determined to be removeable,” it added.

In 2022, ICE arrested 46,396 noncitizens with criminal histories and deported 72,177 to more than 150 countries.
