GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Ministry of Education says classes at a secondary school in Georgetown, Guyana, have been suspended for the remainder of the week following reports of a pigeon infestation.

In a brief statement, the ministry said that it was advising students, parents and other stakeholders of the closure of the Charlestown Secondary School in the capital, “due to reports of a pigeon infestation”.

“The Ministry of Education remains committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for all students and teachers,” it added.

Media reports said that scores of pigeons have flocked the school in recent days, attacking students and teachers while messing up the classrooms with their waste.

“A cleaner attached to the school was badly injured when she was attacked by a swarm of the pigeons,” according to one report.

Chief Education Officer, Saddam Hussein, visited the school on Tuesday for a first-hand look at the situation “and he found that the birds of a feather were flocking together in the school compound,” said one media outlet.
