Lawyer and suspect detained in Trinidad following discovery of body in a suitcase
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) says it has detained an attorney and the main suspect in the death of a 22-year-old woman, whose body was found in a black suitcase dumped in a pond in Sangre Grande, the largest town in northeastern Trinidad, last week.
Police said that the attorney and the suspect were found inside the office of the lawyer and that they believe that the suspect in the murder of 22-year-old Candace Honore, who had been reported missing since July 1, had been at the premises since last Thursday when Honore’s body was found.
Honore, of the neighbouring town of Valencia, was last seen leaving her workplace and calls to her phone went straight to voicemail.
The police said that the lawyer could be charged with harbouring a fugitive.
Initial police reports indicated that the suspect had gone to the lawyer’s office last Thursday seeking representation and that they were told that the attorney had quoted a fee for his services, which the suspect could not pay in full at the time.
Police said the lawyer told the suspect that his family or friends could bring the remainder of the money, and once paid, the lawyer would accompany the suspect to the police station to surrender himself.
However, police received information on Sunday that the suspect was at the attorney’s office and upon arriving at the location, officers found and apprehended the suspect.
