This is the 129th FA Cup final and the first time these teams have met in the competition at this stage. In all, they have played three times previously in the FA Cup, with one win apiece and one game drawn.
But Portsmouth have failed to beat Chelsea in their last 27 meetings, in all competitions. Since Portsmouth beat Chelsea 1-0 in a League Cup tie, in December 1960, the teams have met 27 times, with the London club winning 21 games and the remaining six finishing in draws.
Since Portsmouth last beat Chelsea, nearly half a century ago, they have conceded 62 goals in 27 games, while scoring just 15.
Recently, Chelsea have won 16 out of 17 with one draw. And in the Premier League this season, Chelsea have scored seven goals against Portsmouth, including the 5-0 win at Fratton Park in March when Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda scored two apiece and were joined on the scoresheet by Frank Lampard.
This is Chelsea's 10th FA Cup final. In the previous nine, they have won five and lost four. And in the first decade of this century, they have won three (2000, 2007 and 2009) and lost one (2002).
Portsmouth have played in three previous finals, winning in 2008 against Cardiff and in 1939 (against Wolves) but losing in 1934 (to Manchester City) and 1929 (Bolton).
Chelsea will wear their first-choice colours, of blue shirts, blue shorts and white socks, while Portsmouth will switch to white shirts, burgundy shorts and burgundy socks.
The FA Cup has only ever been retained four times since 1891, and the last three teams to retain it were all from London (Spurs 1962 and 1982 and Arsenal 2003).

Portsmouth have become the fifth side to participate in the FA Cup final and be relegated in the same season; after Manchester City in 1926, Leicester in 1969, Brighton in 1983 and Middlesbrough in 1997, all four lost.
If Portsmouth win the final, they will become the first side to ever be relegated from the top flight and win the FA Cup in the same season.
