After an exciting season at the Bushy Park Racing Circuit in Barbados, the father and son team of Doug and Mark Maloney arrived in the island yesterday for the first leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC).

The Barbadians, who were met by representatives of the of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, will participate at the Labour Day meet at Dover Raceway on Monday, May 24.

Another team from Guyana is scheduled to arrive this afternoon.

President of the JRDC, Hilary Jardine, disclosed on Tuesday night that the CMRC will be contested in two classes, two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

"It will be one race, but the cars will be categorised in two classes. Drivers such as Jamaica's Peter 'Bull' Thompson, Peter Rae and Guyana's Andrew King, Mark and Paul Vieira, along with Mark Maloney of Barbados, will compete for the two-wheel drive title," said Jardine.

Four-wheel title

Meanwhile, defending champion David Summerbell, Chris Campbell, Doug Gore, Gary Williams and Guy Fraser of Jamaica will take on Maloney of Barbados and Kevin Jeffrey of Guyana for the four-wheel title.

Based on reports, battle lines have been drawn between Rae, Thompson, King and Maloney in the two-wheel drive class. All are in with an excellent chance and Rae, with new-look RX7 Mazda - with an engine built by veteran Peter Moodie Sr - looked good during practice sessions at Dover last weekend.

Thompson was also seen practising in his car at Dover and according to reports, it looked like a runaway train.

Meanwhile, Maloney, who recently rebuilt his engine, dominated his class at the Easter Monday race meet in Barbados.

Despite this, it sppears the man they all have to beat is Guyanese Andrew King.

The four-wheel drive segment looks like a Jamaican affair, with Summerbell, Gore, Williams and Campbell set to lead the charge.
