NOTE-WORTHY

TRUTH COMMISSION CALL

The call for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission similar to the one held in post-apartheid South Africa, has fallen on deaf ears. If ever there was an opportune time to hold one in Jamaica, it is now.

This needs to be done to suss out what has led Jamaica down the path currently being played out in urban guerrilla warfare in West Kingston, where many innocent lives are being lost.

A commission of enquiry into garrison politics would not be complete without the presence of former prime minister, Edward Seaga, given that Michael Manley and some others are no longer with us.

If we are to believe that this time the security forces are getting it right and garrisons are indeed being dismantled, we need to hear from the architects of this very divisive politics which has led to the entrapment of the very poor underclass in this political tug of war.

Enough is enough

I cannot help but agree wholeheartedly with R. Oscar Lofters who wrote re Mr Seaga's statement, 'Let my people go' that he appears to think he is Moses of the Bible.

Mr Seaga, Dr Peter Philips, Dr Omar Davies, along with several others who have attended the funerals of notorious dons and have justified their actions about the 'tremendous' work that these men have done in their communities, make Jamaicans at home and abroad weep at what we see and hear.

Grin and bear it

I speak for the thousands of Jamaicans who now listen to the condemnations, praises, analyses on what has been taking place in Jamaica. We hear comments about children who will be scarred for life and how wicked the police and soldiers have been. All these comments have some truth but for the first time, I have hope. Things will have to get worse before there is a turnaround to clean up Jamaica.

tit for tat

During the past week, I reflected on the number of innocent Jamaicans who have been robbed and murdered by heartless criminals. I reflected on the children who were sexually molested and died like dogs. I remember that elderly couple in Mandeville who were robbed and their bodies dumped like garbage. What about these families who have been left to grieve silently for the rest of their lives?

There will be some innocent lives lost but we have to grin and bear it.
