Trophy handover

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP):

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has handed over the World Cup trophy to South Africa's vice-president Kgalema Motlanthe - who says the glittering prize will remain in Africa.

Motlanthe, acting in place of President Jacob Zuma, took charge of the World Cup on the steps of the Union Buildings in the capital Pretoria yesterday - exactly a week ahead of kick-off.

Motlanthe said Africa's first World Cup marked a turning point, and it would be "the first time the trophy remains on the continent".

Blatter revealed he had met with Nelson Mandela on Thursday, and the icon had said he wanted to be at the opening game.

Around 50 members of the presidential staff, wearing colourful costumes and blowing vuvuzelas, watched the ceremony.
