A section of the George Headley Stand at Sabina Park, which now serves as a dormitory for Jamaica's Under-19 cricket team, was damaged by fire at approximately 7 a.m. yesterday.

Anthony Walter, property manager of Sabina Park, told The Gleaner yesterday that no one was in the dorm at the time of fire and they will be doing a thorough investigation into the matter.

No injuries

"The investigation by the fire department is not concluded as yet, but we believe that it may have been started by an electrical appliance which was left plugged in inside the dorm," said Walter.

"No one was injured and that was the important thing, and the fire was initially brought under control by our Sabina Park staff," said Walter.

He added: "The players were on the field practising while this was going on, but a number of them lost personal items, including clothing and gear."
