Workforce wins at Epsom
EPSOM, England (AP):
Workforce overtook pacemaker At First Sight to win the English Derby in a record time by seven lengths in only his third race yesterday to give trainer Michael Stoute his fifth triumph.
A huge upset appeared likely when At First Sight, the 100-1 outsider which was in the race to set a fast pace for Aidan O'Brien's leading contenders, led by 10 lengths halfway down the final straight.
But jockey Ryan Moore got 6-1 shot Workforce to quicken and won his first Derby in a course-record time, beating Lammtarra's mark set in 1995. Workforce was clocked at 2 minutes 31.33 seconds, almost a second faster than Lammtarra's 2:32.31.
"He had a really clean run, I was happy where I was in the race," said Moore, who also won Friday's fillies classic, the Oaks, on Snow Fairy. "We got a dream run and he quickened really well. The ground was fast enough for him, but he's a really good horse and I'm delighted with that."
Belmont Stakes
Later in the day in New York Drosselmeyer pulled off a big upset in the Belmont Stakes, seizing the lead in the stretch to give Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott his first win in a Triple Crown race.
Sent off at odds of 13-1, Drosselmeyer defeated Fly Down by three-quarters of a length. Preakness runner-up First Dude was third after setting the pace for most of the 2400m trip.
Drosselmeyer also gave jockey Mike Smith his first Belmont win in his 13th attempt.
The 3-year-old colt, owned by WinStar Farm, won in 2:31.57.
