The local bodybuilding and fitness fraternity lost one of its stalwarts with the passing of Frederick Smith
Smith died after a long illness last Thursday night at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
He was 67.
According to his son Kenrick, the late president of the Jamaica Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Association had been ailing for months with multiple myloma. His condition worsened during the past month and he had to be hospitalised at the UHWI.
Smith served for years as president of the association, actually doing two stints - first in the 1980s and again during the past decade. Because of his illness, he relinquished the post late last year.
In addition to being a national bodybuilding champion in his younger years - winning the Mr Jamaica title on many occasions - Smith took it to another level in capturing the Caribbean bodybuilding championships in the heavyweight and masters categories as well.
He also toured with many national teams in various capacities including manager and head coach.
He is survived by his widow Doreth, children Kenrick and Sophia, other relatives and friends, including a sister, Nellie.
Smith, who worked with the Jamaica Public Service for over 30 years as a maintenance engineer, was in later years a gym instructor at the Spartan Health Club on Lady Musgrave Road. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly.
