Stephenson captures fifth win
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (CMC):
Jamaican Neville Stephenson won the feature CAN $6,500 Marquis Downs Fillies and Mares Challenge Stakes, and led the way with a treble, on a day when Caribbean jockeys won all eight races on card on Saturday at Marquis Downs.
Stephenson increased his tally of wins for the season to five, and moved into third place in the jockeys" standings, which is headed by Trinidad & Tobago's Naim Samaroo on 10 wins, with Tim Moccasin second on seven.
The Jamaican opened the day's card with his first added-money victory for the season aboard the 3-1 chance FIRE INSIDE, which won the Marquis Downs Fillies and Mares Challenge Stakes by 1 1/2-lengths.
The best
FIRE INSIDE, a three-year-old, grey filly, covered 360 metres on the dirt track in 20.410 seconds, after proving to be best in a duel with ANTES CHARGER under Moccasin.
Stephenson added the CAN $5,000 fifth race going 1,200m, when he drove the 3-1 chance BEAR'S SAGA to a 2 1/2-length victory.
BEAR'S SAGA, a seven-year-old, chestnut gelding, showed he still had the legs, when he stalked the pace, vied for the lead, and drew clear in a run for home to clock one minute, 12.31 seconds.
Stephenson's other win came in the CAN $3,200 seventh race, when he piloted the 3-1 chance MIMI's KID to a 1 1/2-length victory.
MIMI's KID, a four-year-old, bay filly, was away alertly, vied for the lead, before drawing away in the upper stretch to finish the 1,200m dash in 1:16.71.
The other Caribbean jockeys that won were Jamaica's Garfield Gordon, along with Samaroo, as well as compatriots Shastri Singh, Stanley Chadee Jr, and Fazal Razack.
