FOLLOWING his impressive victory in the 100 metres on Saturday, when he equalled his personal and season bests, former Herbert Morrison Technical top sprinter Dexter Lee returned to take the double on yesterday's final day of competition at the National Junior Track and Field Championships at G.C.Foster College.
Lee who on Saturday claimed victory in the Boy's under-20 100m returned to secure the 200m in equally impressive style.
The talented sprinter came off the curve first and held his form well towards the end to clock 20.86 seconds for the win as Manchester's Brandon Tomlinson (21.60) finished second with Camperdown's Jeffrey Josephs taking third in 22.00 seconds.
Lee was very pleased with his performances over the two days.
"I am very happy that I was able to come to the meet and do well as I want to defend my 100 metres title," said Lee who stated that he is not certain he will double at the World Junior Championships.
Multi-talented athlete
Outstanding middle distance athlete Kemoy Campbell of Bellfield High and Calabar thrower Chad Wright along with Holmwood Technical's multi-talented female athlete Janieve Russell were also double winners in the Under-20 category as they won their second event of the meet yesterday.
Running against the clock like he has done all season, Campbell following his win in the 5,000 metres the previous day, once again dominated the field to take home the 1,500m in 14:31.38 as his team-mate Odane Wint was way behind in second place in 16:37.91.
Wright continued his excellent form this season, lifting the shot put title in an impressive new national junior record, 18.87m hurl to edge out his team-mate Ashina Miller who had a mark of 18.40 metres. Wright had earlier won the discus event.
Russell added the Girl's under-20 400m to her tally, following her long jump success on Saturday. Despite a strong challenge from Edwin Allen's Ristananna Tracy in the latter part of the event, Russell showed her class to hold off her opponent to win in 53.70 seconds as Tracy clocked 53.97 seconds for the runner-up spot with Manchester's Sandrae Farquharson showing signs of her old form by finishing third in 54.70.
There was a big surprise in the Girl's under-20 100 metres hurdle event as Immaculate's top hurdler, Samantha Elliot, the Carifta under-20 record holder was relegated to third in the event as Queen's Danielle Williams took the event along with the Carifta silver medallist Tonique Sobah of St Jago High. Williams won in 13.41 as Sobah, 13.67, took the silver with Elliot, 13.82, finishing third. The race was run in a positive 4.4 metres per second wind.
Athletes for both the CAC Championships in Santo Domingo and the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada will know their fate today as the selection committee of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association will meet this morning to decide the composition of both teams.
