16 for LIME Jamaica Derby
Orville Clarke, Gleaner Writer
A maximum field of 16 was declared at the overnight stage yesterday for Saturday's 90th running of the LIME-sponsored Jamaica Derby at Caymanas Park, including Triple Crown hopefuls MARK MY WORD and AL FOUZIA.
Offering a record purse of $9 million - up from $5 million last year - the race is confined to native bred three-year-olds and will be run over a distance of 2400 metres.
Included in the line-up are MARK MY WORD, impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas over 1600 metres on April 5 and AL FOUZIA, the 1000 Guineas heroine.
Both embark on the second leg of the Triple Crown and victory for either will put them firmly in line to become the ninth Triple Crown winner at Caymanas Park, providing they can win the season's final classic, the Jamaica St Leger on July 10.
