Bridge round-up

As a mark of respect on the day of the funeral for Winston ChinYou, Monday night's leg of the Horace Payne Memorial was cancelled. ChinYou, a veteran player and exemplary enthusiast, passed away suddenly early on Wednesday, June 9, having competed with his regular partner, Audley Astwood, up to the week before, achieving his best-ever results, posting consecutive over 60 per cent rounds to win on Saturday and Monday, then finishing a close fourth on Wednesday, June 2.

Action resumed on Wednesday night when Richard Phillips and Peter Mais (64.58 per cent) tuned up for their planned assault on Sunday's major tournament for the Lionel Hall Memorial Trophy by dead-heating with the juniors, Michael Marshall and Walter Brown. Both pairs were well clear of Rex James/Judy Ziadie (third; 52.08 per cent). Sunday's clash of the generations at the Deli Works-sponsored major event is gearing up to be a mouth-watering prospect.

Fort International are Portmore domino champs

Defending champions Fort Inter-national retained the Portmore/St Catherine domino trophy after demolishing Right Stuff 300-242 in the Division I final at Caymanas Park last Sunday. In the Division II final at the same venue, Black Rooster humbled hot favourites Colours Sports Club, beating them 300-279 after both teams were locked at 151 at half-time

Fort International had things pretty much their own way against Right Stuff, having led from start to finish to win by all of 58 points.

Their top players were former national representative Arnett 'Wonder Boy' Ramsay and his partner, Billy Slaughter.

It was the third time in the last seven years that Fort International had emerged Division I champions of the Portmore League, and the seventh time since the inception of the competition in the mid-80s. The team was once again captained by Everton Kalawan and, according to club president, Patrick 'Barry G' McCoy, winning the competition was a "mere formality" after beating former champions Caribbean Classic quite convincingly in the semi-final.

For their efforts, Fort International will receive $130,000 and the championship trophy, while Right Stuff have secured $80,000. Caribbean Classic defeated Era-dication in the third-place play-off to secure $50,000, with Eradication capturing $30,000 for fourth.

In Division II, new champions Black Rooster will receive $50,000, Colours $30,000 and third-place Ken's Wildflower $20,000.

The presentation of trophies and prizes will take place at Caymanas Park on Sunday, July 11 at 3 p.m.

Champs Porus

Porus turned back years of faltering in various Manchester FA run competitions after creating a major upset to beat Georges Valley 1-0 in the final of the Power Services-sponsored Under-17 league held at Brooks Park on Wednesday.

Sebastian Williams, who had scored twice in his team's big 5-1 semi-final win over Settlement, netted the all-important goal in the 17th minute.

Victory came against all predictions and the general pattern of play which was dominated by Georges Valley, who had dethroned the champions of the last three years, Mile Gully.

The competition has been a driving force behind the improved performance of Manchester-based teams in the dacCosta Cup. In the last two years, Spaldings High and Manchester High have reached the rural schoolboy finals.
