University of the West Indies (UWI) defeated Olympic Gardens Angels 8-6 to capture the Jamaica Rugby League Association (JRLA) Knockout nine-a-side trophy at Red Stripe, Spanish Town Road, on Saturday.

Desmond Samuels and Kevaughn Vassell both netted tries for UWI, who were securing first hold on the trophy.

Shamar Creary scored the consolation try for Olympic Gardens. Troy Hinds, vice-captain of UWI, said he was delighted with his team's performance because they played well together as a team.

Happy for turnaround

"I feel very good because we haven't been doing well in the tournaments that we have played in before. But today we won all our matches in the competition and I am very happy for this," said Hinds.

"I think that this victory will help us to bond together a lot more for future tournaments," he added.

On their way to the final, UWI beat Duhaney Park Red Sharks, while Olympic Gardens stopped St Catherine Old Boys in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Portmore Eliminators won the St Catherine 13 competition, with a comfortable 18-4 win over G.C. Foster College.

Paul Walker, Alexander Allen and Swayson McNuff scored tries for the Eliminators, who were winning this trophy for the first time.
