DEru

The Gleaner will, over the course of the next two weeks, be acquainting our readers with the contestants in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) Festival Song Competition. Look out for it!

Song title: 'Nuh Weh Nuh Betta'

Jamaican neo-soul song stylist Deru is not your run-of-the-mill young singer.

His trademark rich and resonant tenor/baritone voice, passionate and infectious stage presence, his winning smile, charm and good looks combined with his smooth, yet edgy and sexy style, make listening to him sing and watching him perform, a unique treat.

Deru has originals, as well as remakes to his credit and more than 20 recordings and three music videos. The artiste has also worked with producers such as Mikey Bennett, Bobby Digital, Computer Paul, Kalibuds and Devon Sparks. His live performances include appearances at the Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival and Jazz in the Gardens. Also an actor, Deru has been involved in the Jamaica Musical Theatre Company's 2009 production of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, Father Luke and Father Richard Holung's Jamaican opera Yes. He also spent a year with the University Singers.

Many may also know Deru from his appearances as one of the 12 finalists in Red Stripe's 'Big Break' in 2005.
