GROS-ISLET, St Lucia (CMC):

A penetrative spell from Derone Davis triggered a Jamaica batting collapse that swept Trinidad & Tobago to a valuable first-innings lead over the defending champions, in the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge yesterday.

T&T, leading by 41 runs on first innings, fortified their position, when openers Nicholas Alexis and Teshawn Castro carried them to 39 without loss in their second innings, at the close on the second day of their first-round match at the Gros-Islet playing field.

Davis snared four wickets for 36 runs from 19 overs and Kissoondath Magram took two for 57 from 16 overs, as Jamaica were dismissed for 209, replying to T&T's first innings total of 250.

Opener Peat Salmon hit the top score of 55 for Jamaica, whose captain Paul Palmer made 43, John Campbell got 27 and Kemar Marshall 21.

Jamaica continued from their bedtime total of 37 without loss and reached 92 for one at lunch, following the departure of opener John Campbell, caught behind off T&T captain Yanick Ottley.

When play resumed following lunch, Palmer extended a second-wicket stand with Salmon to 81 before he was lbw to Sachin Boodram.

His dismissal triggered the batting collapse that left Jamaica short of the target, with Davis getting into the spin of things, when he trapped Salmon lbw, ending an innings that included five fours and one six from 174 balls in close to 3 1/2 hours.

After Marshall was caught at extra cover off Yanick Cariah, there was little substance or stability from the rest of the Jamaica batting.

Jermaine Blackwood with 17 and Donovan Nelson with 15 added 30 for the seventh wicket in a desperate push towards the target, but the Jamaicans lost their last four wickets for 16 runs.

AT BEAUSEJOUR CRICKET GROUND: Kyle Mayers scalped the Windward Islands openers to follow up a half-century from Roston Chase that put Barbados in front in their match yesterday.

Windwards, trailing by 58 runs on first innings, reached 72 for three at the close on the second day.

This followed a solid 81 from Chase that anchored Barbados to 190, replying to the Windwards' first innings total of 132.

Bronte Bess was the pick of the Windwards' bowlers with three wickets for 26 runs from nine overs Audy Alexander, the Windwards' captain, captured three for 33 from 10 overs, and Kaveem Hodge snared three for 44 from 28 overs.

AT DENNERY: Leeward Islands, trailing by 62 runs on first innings, reached 73 for five in their second innings at the close on the second day yesterday.
