Maragh wins Northlands Oaks Stakes
EDMONTON, Ontario (CMC):
Jamaica-born jockey Tony Maragh won the CDN$50,000 Northlands Oaks Stakes when he carved out a handsome 6-1/2 length victory aboard the three-year-old bay filly NOTORIOUSLY on Monday.
Sitting just off the lead throughout the mile-long trip at Northlands Park, Maragh got the lead heading into the stretch and reached the wire going away in a time of 1:40.60.
Even-money favourite SHIFTY TIME was second while AMONG THE WILLOWS was third, in the nine-horse event for three-year-old fillies.
Steady pace
Following an even break, Maragh stalked the pace with NOTORIOUSLY as THAT VOO-DOO YOUDO set a steady pace along the rails, racking up 23.80 seconds for the first quarter and 47.40 for the quarter mile.
NOTORIOUSLY steadily gained ground along the backstretch and as the race reached the final turn, Maragh brought her into contention to grab the lead at the six-furlong mark.
The 4-1 bet then drew away impressively to win $30,000 for owner Darrell Landry.
Barbadian Rico Walcott made his mark on the nine-race card, taking race six aboard the four-year-old bay filly IN PINK BOOTS going 1-1/16th miles while his country-man Desmond Bryan reached the winners' row with the six-year-old mare SPEEDUBAI in race two over a mile.
