Jamaican boxing star Nicholas Walters received a bonus from the World Boxing Association (WBA) recently, when he was moved into the Top 10 in their world ratings.
Walters, who was formerly rated No.12, moved up two places to the elite 10 after his scintillating victory over Colombian Jose Miguel Payares on July 31 in Colon City, Panama.
Entry into the Top 10 in the world ratings is an indication that Walters is now on track to a world-title fight.
He has been a professional for two years and has a 15-0 record, with 12 victories inside the distance. He defeated Payares by way of a sixth-round TKO (technical knock out) on July 31, in a performance that pleased his connections.
The WBA featherweight champion is Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa and the No. 1 contender is Daniel Ponce DeLeon from Mexico. Two other Mexican fighters, Antonio Escalante and Johnny Gonzalez, are rated No. 2 and No.3.
For the Payares fight, Walters, who is based in Panama, trained in Miami for six weeks under the guidance of Orlando Cuellar, who trains former world light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson.
