Doug Saunders a good choice for CARICOM

Published:Monday | August 23, 2010 | 12:00 AM

A committee, chaired by Barbados foreign minister Maxine McLean, has been given the job of searching for a new secretary general of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to replace the retiring Edwin Carrington.

We believe that Mr Douglas Saunders, Jamaica's Cabinet secretary and before that the permanent secretary in the foreign ministry, would be a perfect candidate.

Mr Saunders has the equanimity, skill, training and competence for the job, especially during this period of transition. His long stint in Brussels as Jamaica's ambassador, interacting with the European Union and ACP secretariats, and his most recent posts, would serve him in good stead.
