Hill new president of Tennis Jamaica
Noted businessman Aubyn Hill has been elected as the new president of Tennis Jamaica (TJ), following the recent resignation of Phillip Gore.
Gore, who served in the position for the last five years, officially vacated the post, along with his wife and honorary secretary, Christine Gore, last month.
Having originally pledged to act as administrators for the sport for three years, the pair served for an additional two, but announced their intention not to continue in their respective posts earlier this year.
Hill, along with Leroy Brown, who will take over as honorary secretary, assumed their posts at an extraordinary general meeting held by the body last week.
According to a TJ release, Hill told the meeting that he had given serious thought to the challenges he would face. Voluntary organisa-tions, he said, are difficult to run because one has to encourage people to contribute, but he was willing to try to make a difference to the sport that has kept him healthy and that he loves.
While indicating that more pressing commitments had affected their ability to be directly involved, Christine Gore insisted that the couple were by no means turning their back on tennis.
"We will continue to support him and would be willing to work with him in whatever capacity he has need," Gore told The Gleaner.
"Our involvement in the sport will, of course, continue as there is still the scholarship fund, which is a substantial investment and existed before our assuming positions on the board."
The Scholarship Fund, has provided scholarships for several of Jamaica's most talented youth players over the past decade.
