  • Bridge round-up

The juniors are really coming into their own and they proved it by dominating Monday night's leg of the Horace Payne Memorial. One of their leading lights, Walter Brown, teamed with his declarer play coach Richard Phillips for a winning 61.11 per cent round, while fellow juniors Michael Marshall and Douglas Robinson (53.97 per cent) tied for second with veterans Balmain Brown (Walter's father) and Ripton Savin.

Walter did not play in Wednesday night's leg of the David Levy Trophy, paving the way for Rex James and Trevor Jones to win with 61.31 per cent in a tight finish from Calvin Wong and Winston Smith (60.71 per cent). Rosie Mahfood and Ulla Dahl (55.95 per cent) were third.

This month's special team of four event for the Don DaCosta Trophy was won by the team of Judy Ziadie, Rex James, Calvin Wong and Charles Williams, who swamped second-place Richard Phillips, Peter Mais, Marlene Fulford and Monica Cools-Lartigue in the final by a massive 50 IMPs.

  • Carib Cement crush Gleaner 5-0 in BH semis

The 2008 champions Carib Cement crushed former champions, The Gleaner, 5-0 in their KSAFA/Western Sports-sponsored Division I football semi-final match on Thursday afternoon at Red Stripe Oval, to advance to next Saturday's final.

In the other semi-final match, also on Thursday, unbeaten Petrojam earned the right to meet Cement following their 6-2 win over UWI at the NWC playing field, Mona.

Led by a brace from ace striker Fabian Nethersole in the second and 32nd minutes, Carib Cement overwhelmed their opponents after Nethersole had given them a 2-0 lead at half-time, both goals coming via headers.

Despite the presence of Cavalier Super League players Locksley Thompson, Donovan Alvaranga, Fabian Swaby and Bernard Blackwood from last season's champion team, Gleaner played way below their best. To make matters worse, they were down to 10 men from early in the second half when Alvaranga was shown the red card for dangerous play.

Alexi Dobson made it 3-0 for Cement in the 54th minute, while Jermaine 'Fast Car' Rowe and Desmond Taylor completed the rout with goals in the 58th and 88th minutes, respectively.

In the other semi-final, double strikes by Ricardo Munroe in the 13th and 77th minutes, and Richard Stultz in the 60th and 70th minutes, paved the way for last year's Division II champions Petrojam to whip UWI 6-2.

Aphas Bernard (45th minute) and David Stultz (59th minute) rounded off the scoring for Petrojam, while Kenrick Brown scored for UWI in the 10th and 74th minutes.

The Division II final between unbeaten Wisynco and Wray & Nephew will also be played next Saturday at the venue, starting at 2 p.m.

  • Wray & Nephew, Wisynco in KO final

Wisynco will oppose Wray & Nephew in today's Scotiabank-sponsored Business House KO football final at the UWI Bowl, Mona, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Wisynco have the distinction of being the only unbeaten team in Business House football this season and should start favourites to win the first of two trophies, as they have also made it to the Division II final next Saturday, against Wray & Nephew again.

In reaching the KO final, Wisynco have taken out a number of top Division I teams, including Carib Cement, Petrojam, NWC and outgoing Division I champions, Scotiabank.

  • Mico defeat Jamalco in Clarendon Senior League

The semi-finals of both the senior and junior divisions in the Juici Patties-sponsored Clarendon Netball League will be on tomorrow at the Mineral Heights Sports Centre.

The Mico University team, which topped the preliminary round - the first by an outsider - will play Holmwood A in the first semis at 3 p.m. The crowd-puller an hour later features the two Clarendon-based home teams - Jamalco and Windalco.

In last weekend's final round, Mico University earned bragging rights by defeating home favourites Jamalco 49-47 to remain undefeated in the preliminary round in seven matches. Mico, who were spurred by Shauna Carradice's game high 40 from 46 attempts, led 10-9 after the first quarter, 22-20 after the second and decisively, 38-29 at the end of the third quarter. Jamalco, led by veteran Elaine Davis (48/42), actually outscored Mico 18-11 in the fourth, but too much damage had already been done.

Tuff Gong are two-time champions in the competition's 15-year history, the last being in 2007. Settlement are making the finals for the second straight year - beaten last year by Studds, who were dethroned after failing to make the cut to the second round.

Tuff Gong secured their place in the final after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Harmons, while Settlement ended the late spurt of wins by Rising Star 3-1.

Both games were locked at 1-1 at half-time. Kevaughn Issacs and Recardo Levy scored for Tuff Gong, while Xavier Lindsay got one for Harmons.

Settlement's win was engineered by Reggie Thomas' double strike.

The exciting George North, who put together the best preliminary-round record, will take on Roose Madrid in tomorrow's quarter-final feature match of the New Testament Church of God-organised Cobbla Church league.

In last week's first round of quarter-final games, Spring Ground created a mild upset, defeating the fancied Church team 1-0. However, the day's honours were reserved for Mile Gully, who showed no mercy in spanking Richmond 4-0. Mile Gully's win was centred around Kenny Mullings' hat-trick and a lone strike by Joel Paler.

Tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. New Bowens kick off the day's proceedings against Railroad. Invincible, who topped Zone Three after an impressive 4-0 win over Mineral Heights last weekend, face stiff challenge from Bottom Hall, who ended second in Zone One.
