FALMOUTH, Trelawny:

Village United stopped Waterhouse 2-0 in Digicel Premier League match at the Elliston Wakeland Centre in Falmouth yesterday.

André Moore opened the scoring with a glancing header from the top of the penalty box in the 54th minute, running on to lodge his powerful header into the corner of the net.

Jerome Eccleston also scored with a header, this time in the 72nd minute, effectively wrapping up all three points for the home team.

Having come back home to Village after a season away from the club, veteran Teofore Bennett, who came on in the second half, was in vintage mood and had the defence in a quandary. In fact, it was he who was offended, drawing the free kick which resulted in the first goal.

Surrendered opportunities

Although outplaying the opposition, Village still surrendered several opportunities to the visitors and came out on top largely due to some brilliant goalkeeping from Ryan Cooper.

Village's coach, Marvin Tate, was upbeat following the important win: "It was a masterful display by the youngsters and we benefited from some blunders; but blunders are what cause wins and losses," said Tate.

Waterhouse coach Baris Johnson believes his team did not turn up to play and paid the price for their poor performance.

"We tried everything. It was just one of those days when nothing worked," said Johnson.
