Thompson goes third at Suffolk with double
EAST BOSTON, Massachusetts (CMC):
Jamaican jockey Winston Thompson reeled off a pair of come-from-behind rides to land his second successive brace at Suffolk Downs on Tuesday evening and snatch third place in the jockeys' standings.
Riding on the nine-race card at the north-eastern United States racetrack, Thompson carved out victories in race five with the three-year-old gelding Dad Arewethereyet, and in race eight with the five-year-old bay gelding Gimmearoutine.
With the double, Thompson moved into third spot in the jockeys' championship with 54 wins, overtaking Orlando Bocachica on 53. Tammi Piermarini continues to lead with 74 wins.
Thompson first entered the winners' enclosure aboard the 17-1 bet Dad Arewethereyet, as he beat the three-year-olds and upward going six furlongs.
This Is Bananas set the early pace and led by 3-1/2 lengths with a half mile covered, with Thompson and Dad Arewethereyet cruising at the back of the field.
By the turn, however, Thompson had made good ground and sent the gelding three-wide to challenge the leaders.
Overhauled
In the stretch, they overhauled This Is Bananas and Red Ranger to reach the finish 1-1/2 lengths clear in one minute, 12.95 seconds.
Thompson completed the double in the irons of the 7-1 bet Gimmearoutine, going another six furlongs for the three-year-olds and upward.
With Granted Ruler and Osterville disputing the lead, Thompson sat Gimmearoutine in mid-pack before getting clear in the stretch to reach the wire by 2-3/4 lengths.
