Gleaner Companyon top in BH netball

Last year's Junior League champions, Gleaner Company, maintained their lead in the Business House Netball Association's Wisynco Intermediate 'B' League on Tuesday, clipping ATL Group 16-15 at the Leila Robinson Courts.

Goal shooter Winsome Francis, with 10 goals, led the way for Gleaner Company, who lead the standings by virtue of four wins from five matches. They lost for the first time last Saturday, going down 25-18 to Bureau of Standards (BSJ) at the Leila Robinson Courts.

In other Intermediate 'B' matches played on Tuesday, BSJ nipped Guardian Life 21-20, Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) Group beat NWC 30-26 and Pan Caribbean drubbed Wray & Nephew 28-8.

Last Saturday in Intermediate 'B' action, VMBS beat SERHA 33-25, the ATL Group stopped Advantage General Insurance Company 28-20 and W & N defeated NWC 22-18.

In Intermediate 'A' League action, HEART Trust/NTA beat JCF 'B' 26-22 on Tuesday, JPS stopped Digicel 47-33 and JCF 'B' beat GraceKennedy 30-18 last Saturday.

In the Senior League, defending champions Scotiabank 'A' defeated Jamaica Broilers Group 57-43 in a top-of-the-table clash to make it four wins in a row.

Former national player Marsha Murphy (goal shooter) scored 40 points for Scotia 'A'; while Viola Francis-Cummings supported with 17. Scotiabank 'B' clipped the Wisynco Group 38-37, while Sagicor Life defeated NHT 50-40 in other Senior League matches played last Saturday.

LIME beat NHT in Digicel 20/20

High-riding LIME defeated National Housing Trust (NHT) by 10 runs at Mico on Sunday to advance to the semi-final of the Digicel 20/20 Business House cricket competition.

Batting first, the star-studded LIME were restricted to 109 all out off 19.2 overs. After losing national player Horace Miller, who went without scoring, LIME had to fight for every run as former Jamaica and West Indies under-19 player, André McCarthy, made 30, Marvin Lobban 18 and Ryan Francis 17. National spinner Bevon Brown took 2-21 and Shaun Lee Earle 2-17.

National Housing Trust replied with 99 for nine off their 20 overs - Errol Downer 30, Lawrence Smalling 21, Karl Harris 18; Francis 3-9, Damion Jacobs 3-17. LIME will meet Sagicor in the semi-final on October 10.

Meanwhile, Jamalco scored a surprise nine-run victory over defending champions Jamaica Broilers to advance to the final. Jamalco have actually drawn a bye to the final where they will meet either LIME or Sagicor.

Only one match is scheduled tomorrow in the Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners 35-over KO competition, this between Digicel and LIME at Kensington Park, starting at 11 a.m. The winning team will meet NHT in the fnal on Sunday, September 26.

Berger are KO domino champions again

Defending champions Berger Paints retained the Wray & Nephew-sponsored Business House KO domino title on Friday, September 10, when they defeated Courts 175-165 in the final at Jacisera Park.

Berger, who are Division-One contenders, had to work overtime to beat Division Two campaigners Courts by 10 points, this after leading by two points at half-time.

Meanwhile, semi-final matches in the Wray & Nephew-sponsored league will be played at Jacisera Park on Friday, September 24 and the final on the following Friday, October 1.

Cal's pool tour continues next weekend

The second leg of the Cal's Spring Water and Real Vibes Party Wine eight-ball pool tour moves to Upper Level Sports Bar in Mandeville on September 25 and 26 with lucrative prizes again in the offing.

Entries close tonight at Hot Shots Pool Hall, 103 Constant Spring Road, and the draw will take place at the same venue on Wednesday night during their midweek mini tournaments.

Organised by the newly formed Jamaica Billiards Association, the tour comprises seven tournaments (one each month) at different venues across the island.

The first was held on August 28 and 29 at the Hot Shots Pool Hall, 103 Constant Spring Road and attracted many of the island's top players. It was won by MoBay's Noel 'Schoolboy' Blagrove, who defeated the season's top-ranked player, Ewart Hall, in the final to secure the $80,000 prize and trophy. Hall received $35,000 and a trophy for second.

The same level of prizes are again being offered, but indications are more big-name players will contest this tournament. The island's number-one player, Sunil 'Termite' Kissendal, who missed the first, is expected to play.

Entry fee is $1,000 for members of the Jamaica Billiards Association and $1,500 for late entries. However, players who are not members of the billiards association are required to pay $3,000 for membership and another $1,000 to enter the tournament.

Nugent Ximinies, managing director of Cal's Spring Water, said he is looking forward to another exciting stop on the tour.

The third leg scheduled for MoBay has been brought forward to October 16 and 17 and not October 30 and 31 as originally scheduled.

George North are Cobbla Church champions

Two late goals helped George North to beat Mile Gully 2-0 and in the process lift the Cobbla New Testament Church of God football league, last Sunday at the Cobbla Youth Camp grounds.

A competitive game between the previously unbeaten teams, as well as preliminary zone winners, was scoreless until the 75th minute when Avadine Ellington, the league's leading goalscorer, struck.

Hard-working captain of the George North team, Jason Wint, then fittingly sealed the championship in the 88th minute after Mile Gully were forced in an all-out attack to get a tying goal that would have sent the game into extra time.

George North will collect a winning prize of 35,000, with Mile Gully pocketing 25,000.

Peter Bunting/Georges Valley league

The final two semi-finalists in the Peter Bunting/Georges Valley Corner League footbal competition will be decided tomorrow with a double-header at the deCarteret field.

At 1:30 p.m., high-riding Hope Village, which topped their preliminary zone, take on Porus. In the feature at 3:30 p.m., Belair Boyz entertain Red Square, winners of their zone.

Last weekend, Kirk Porter scored in extra time for Comfort to defeat Belitiro 1-0 to book the first semi-final spot of the 2010 season. Jody McGlashan then scored within regulation time to secure Sweeden Street's place with a 1-0 win over Star-liner. Twenty-four teams started the competition.

Semi-final battle in Clarendon Business House

The semi-finals of the Tait's Pharmacy-sponsored Clarendon Business House six-a-side football competition will be played tomorrow at the Mineral Heights football field.

Action starts at 7 a.m. with the playing of the first semi-finals between Mack Chem and Sinclair's Bargain Centre.

The second at 8 a.m. features competition favourites, Juici Patties, against Goverment Agencies.

Juici Patties' place in the semi-finals was never in doubt as they stayed unbeaten for seven matches, topping Zone Two with maximum 21 points. It was always a question of who would join them, with Sinclair answering that call after they beat JNBS 3-2 last Sunday.

Zone One was a fight to the end of the preliminary stage on Wednesday. Both Mack Chem and Government Agencies finished on 14 points, with the former getting the nod for zone honours on a superior goal difference. Mack Chem defeated Agencies 3-0 when the two clashed last Sunday. However, Mack Chem were beaten by Carryshell on Wednesday. Agencies, however, rebounded to defeat JPS 2-0 with both goals coming from the boots of Ryan Singh.

In other results, JPS extended May Pen Police' dismal showing this year, beating them 5-1 - the lawmen' fifth defeat in seven matches. Epic Hardware ended their season on a winning note, edging Transport 1-0, while Glass & Windows, which promised so much when the competition began, finished 1-1 with Stewart's Hardware.,The finals will be played next Wednesday at the same venue.

New Bowens win Jamalco league

In a hot-tempered final at the Jamalco Sports Club last weekend, New Bowens turned the tables on hot favourites Top Hill 1-0 to lift the 2010 Jamalco Football League trophy.

Calrick Campbell scored the crucial goal to hand Top Hill their first defeat of the season, while handing New Bowens a well-earned revenge from their first-round loss.

The game was, however, marred by violent play throughout. Three New Bowens players were booked, along with one from Top Hill. However, both teams had a player sent off.

Portmore Lane to extend winning streak

Leaders Portmore United are expected to add to their five-match winning streak, as they clash with second-to-last Portsmouth United in the MP Colin Fagan-sponsored Portmore South East St Catherine Domino League at Portmore Gardens tomorrow.

In other games, Waterford United welcome Westchester Nuckuz, fifth-place Cumberland host defending champs Westchester United, Hangover United oppose City Black Rock, and Ken's Wildflower entertain City Black Rock. All games begin at 1 p.m.

Lambert slams 108 as Ken's win

Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert slammed 108 not out, as Ken's Wildflower defeated Belmont by 48 runs in the Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Twenty/20 Portmore Cricket Tournament at the Bridgeport sports ground on Sunday.

Scores: Ken's Wildflower 174-5, Lambert 108; Wayne Guthrie bagged 3-34 for Belmont. Belmont in reply struggled to 126-6 in 20 overs. Wayne Gayle struck 57, while Rohan Cato and Lambert pocketed two wickets apiece for Ken's Wildflower.

In the opening match at the venue, Reid's Pen whipped Washington CC by 91 runs. Scores: Reid's Pen, 164 all out; Nowell Clarke 27,Victor Barrack, 24; Sheldon Hanson, Adrian Bailey, 4-2, 3-19.

Washington CC, 73 all out, Earl Anglin, 12, Ryan Bennett, 3-15, Nowell Morrison, 3-20. In a match at Portsmouth, Bridgeview defeated Portsmouth by three wickets. The competition continues tomorrow.

Scotia, JNBS winin inter-bank football

Defending champions Scotiabank Group took up where they left off last season with a 2-0 victory over Bank of Jamaica (BoJ), in the opening round of the JNBS/Western Sports-sponsored Norman Goodison Inter-Bank football league on Sunday at the NWC playing field, Mona.

After a goalless first half in which play was even for the most part, Scotiabank came into their own with a double strike from last season's top marksman, Stefan Bartley. The wily striker struck in the 50th and 71st minutes, the first a solo effort. He latched on to a Richard West cross 21 minutes later and tapped past goalkeeper Joseph Sradath.

Scotiabank face a tough assignment tomorrow when they oppose JNBS, a rematch of last year's finalists, in second-round action at the NWC playing field, starting at 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, in the two other opening round matches, JNBS slammed RBTT 5-0, thanks to a brace from Kimaro Williams in the 36th and 38th minutes, Jair Minott in the 28th minute, Kimani Young in the 69th and Ricardo Atkinson in the 85th minute. In the other match, FirstCaribbean International Bank drew 0-0 with Pan Caribbean-Sagicor.

The matches on tomorrow are FirstCaribbean vs RBTT at 2 p.m. at the NWC playing field. Scotiabank vs JNBS in the feature match at 4 p.m. and Pan Caribbean-Sagicor vs BoJ at the Old Men's Hockey Field, Mona, starting at 3 p.m.
