All set for 'Last Man Standing'

The fourth staging of this year's Jamwest drag racing extravaganza blasts off today at the Jamwest Speedway at New Hope, Little London, Negril. The meet, dubbed 'The Last Man Standing', is expected to feature some of the island's top racers.

"The race day kicks of at eight a.m.," said Windsor Young, track manager. "There's a purse money deal for all race classes, from eight seconds go right up. Winner takes all."

"The cars are getting faster and we try to confine them to a designated area. And that area is Jamwest," Young added.

"Patrons can come out to see very entertaining races, such as the eight-second race, where big names like D. Shaw and Desmond Lee from Kingston will be going up against each other for the championship," he said.

There is also an expected showdown between AK Damage and Craig Lue for the nine-seconds championship.

"And as I said before, it's winner takes all."

Other events for the day include the speed-testing of the jetcar equipped with a jet turbine.

Jamwest has been around for over 15 years and is owned by Ian Gordon.

"He originally ran it, but due to the headache and stress of promotion he gave it up me," Young told Automotives.

"We usually have five meets per year. This one will be the fourth and the last one will be on November 29," he said.

The entrance fee to participate in a race is $3,500 while general admission is $1,000. For $1,500, patrons can access the pit area. Children under 12 are free.
