NEW DELHI (AP):

Commonwealth Games Federation chief (CGF) Michael Fennel has expressed grave concern over the state of the athletes' village for the October 3-14 New Delhi Games, saying the facility is "seriously compromised".

Fennell says final preparations for the village, which opens to athletes on Thursday, have been a concern since the CGF visited the residential zone on September 15 and "many issues remain unresolved".

"The village is the cornerstone of any Games and the athletes deserve the best possible environment to prepare for their competition," he said in a statement yesterday.

Fennell has written to the government, saying the appearance of the International zone was good, but "the condition of the residential zone has shocked the majority".
