PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Sean Fraser fired North East Stars into the quarter-finals of the Trinidad & Tobago Pro League Cup competition, with a strike in injury-time in a 2-1 victory over FC South End on Saturday.

The Jamaican striker spared the Stars from heading into extra-time, when he collected a pass from Gary Glasgow and shot into an open goal to secure a quarter-final date with reigning champions Joe Public.

Fraser had also netted the winner for Stars in the final of the Goal Shield competition, at the same venue, more than a month earlier.

The Sangre Grande-based Stars went into the clash as heavy favourites to win the qualifying-round encounter, following solid performances against South End in the T&TPFL and the Goal Shield.

South End proved to be a tougher opponent than expected, however, following a goalless first half.

South End took a 48th-minute lead through midfielder Larry Bacchus and 10 minutes from the end, Stars' persistence brought reward, when a left-sided cross from Vincentian Kendall Velox skidded off the surface and deflected off South End defender Anderson Morrison and past his own goalkeeper to level the score.

The quarter-finals will be played on October 1 and 2, with the semi-final on October 15, and the final eight days later.
