Last year's beaten finalists, Manchester High School, confirmed themselves as firm favourites to top Zone G of the 2010 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup rural area senior schoolboy football competition yesterday afternoon, when they blanked Knox College 2-0 in their top-of-the-table clash at Manchester.
By virtue of their win, the Barry Watson-coached Manchester High now have maximum 15 points from their five games. In addition, the team which scored through Samuda Johnson and Kymani Burke has lifted its goal tally to a competition-high 28.
"It was one of the better games of the season so far, as we came up against a very physical Knox team, which came ready to play," said Watson.
"I thought we played pretty well and came out deserved winners. We are really quite pleased with this result."
Relentless tracking
In another Zone G game, Spaldings High continued their relentless tracking of Manchester High, scoring a 4-1 win over Porus High to settle comfortably into second place on 10 points. Spaldings have three wins and draw in their four games.
In Zone J, former champions Dinthill Technical, who have been having an uncharacteristically poor season, notched their first win of this campaign, clipping Bog Walk 2-1. Prior to today's game, Dinthill had two defeats and one draw.
In the big Clarendon derby between former champions and long-standing arch-rivals Clarendon College and Vere Technical, the Clarendon College team won 1-0 in a Zone H game coach Donovan Duckie felt they should have won by a much wider margin.
Lone goal
Tavar Green scored the lone goal.
"This win means a lot to us psychologically, based on the long rivalry between the teams over the years," said Duckie. "We watched one of their previous games and basically went out and prepared for them. We should probably have won 9-0 based on the chances we got."
By virtue of their win, their third from three starts, Clarendon College now have maximum nine points and are beginning to look a serious contender in the race for the coveted championship.
In the other Zone H game, Edwin Allen clipped Claude McKay 1-0.
