DJ Shine steals the limelight
Probably you have heard about the young disc jock from Spanish Town, who, in the last four months, has been booking out shows from Kingston and Negril's high-end sessions to overseas party playgrounds. This Green Synergy third-place winner's raw talent and natural love for the art of mixing have put him on the map.
He is Jason GoShine.
- DJ Shine, why did you choose this career?
I love music, so I always knew it was my thing, you know. Music is really my life!
- How long have you been mixing and playing music?
I have been playing music from I was in high school, but I made it my life after I graduated from St Catherine High School. So, in essence, it was from high school to the studio.
- Are you affiliated with any sound system, or are you a freelancer?
I am in a sound called Hit-Factory, which myself and some other friends founded in Spanish Town after I left school.
- What are some of the perks of being a disc jockey?
Well, I get to do what I love, and not a lot of people get to do that, so I would say I am blessed!
- You were in the Green Synergy competition in '09. What was the experience like, and how did it help your career?
It was a good experience, going up against other DJs and learning other techniques that advanced my mixing skills. But being placed third in the competition opened many doors and opportunities that I am grateful for. So the entire experience was a positive one.
- Name five things that complete you?
My mother, my girlfriend, my music, my phone and my laptop.
- Many persons have pointed you out as one of the most fashionable young DJs in the industry. Tell us about your style?
My style is hot, but very simple, Less is more, you know!
- If there was one city that reflected your style, what city would that be, and why?
That city would be New York City, and the reason I picked NYC is because you can express yourself through your style of dressing - freedom of expression.
- What is your most memorable fashion trend of the '90s?
I used to love seeing the ladies in platforms (boots), you know!
- How does your style reflect the type of music you play?
Well, that is simple. Just as how my clothes have to be on point, my music has to be on point. When mixing, the music must follow, just like my attire.
- If you were being set up on a blind date, what would you wear?
If I am going on a date, I would mix preppy with gangster. For example, I would wear a button-down shirt and an express pants with polo sneakers.
- When is a woman at her sexiest?
A woman is sexiest when she is in my white V-neck T-shirt and boxers with a ponytail. I love that!
- What are your greatest strengths in the music industry?
Looking back at where I am coming from and focusing on where I want to be in this industry.
- Any advice for upcoming disc jockeys?
I would tell them, if you love music and you know that this is what you want to do, do it from your heart and let no one stop you. And trust in God.
- Who are the most stylish female dancehall/reggae artistes in the industry?
Raine Seville, Tami Chynn and Tifa.
