It took just about an hour for an audience at the Grand Palladium's Lady Hamilton Theatre to figure out just what 18 beautiful girls were made of.

It was Saturday, and the following day those 18 would add two to their number and 20 would vie for the title of Miss Global International.

On that Sunday night, five of the group would be allowed to perform. For that to happen, they would have to use three minutes to make Saturday theirs.

Miss Guyana, Nalita Rajkumar, performed an African-inspired dance to Shakira's hit Wakka Wakka, while Miss Guadeloupe, Elso Maite, did a poem in French.

Miss Cape Verde, Vanderleia Rosario, perform admirably; her dance routine was exquisite.

Miss Malaysia, Marlene Lym; Miss Haiti, Jennifer Lovelace, who did a short but emotional folksong depicting the spirit of her earthquake-ravished country during and after the life-changing event; Miss US Virgin Islands, K'nyshau Cameron; Miss Nevis and Miss Jamaica, Shereen Sterling, were standout performers.

See tomorrow's Gleaner for more details on Miss Global International.
