- Nelson triple
WINNIPEG, Canada (CMC):
Jamaican jockey Tyrone Nelson rode a triple at Assiniboia Downs on Sunday to bring a fitting end to the season at the western Canada racetrack. Nelson captured race one with In The Other, race six with Rage Till Dawn and race eight with Exhilarated, to make headlines on the eight-race card. He finished the season fourth in the standings with 51 wins, as Vicky Baze captured the jockeys' title with 71. Larren Delorme finished second on 68 wins with Janine Stianson one back in third.
- Suspended trio
ISLAMABAD (AP):
The three Pakistan cricketers suspended and charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) over match-fixing allegations have been selected as reserves for their regional Pakistani teams for a domestic Twenty20 tournament next month.
Test captain Salman Butt and opening bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were charged after allegations they received money to bowl no-balls at predetermined times in a Test against England last month.
Rawalpindi picked Amir, Lahore selected Butt and Asif was included by defending champion Sialkot. However, all three players will need clearance from the ICC to play.
Meanwhile, Yawar Saeed has stepped down as manager of the Pakistan cricket team after the scandal-marred tour of England. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a statement that Saeed "has requested ... to be relieved of his duties" and the PCB chairman has agreed to his request.
- Barcelona for 2013
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP):
The governing body of world swimming yesterday selected Barcelona, Spain, to host the 2013 World Championships. FINA president Julio Maglione tells The Associated Press that Barcelona was picked because it had the infrastructure and the support of the national and local government. Barcelona hosted the championships in 2003. The FINA executive board is meeting in the Uruguayan resort of Punta del Este. The 2011 World Championships will be held in Shanghai, China.
