Perfect Ramsay takes national junior crown

University of the West Indies (UWI) medical science student, Zachary Ramsay, was crowned the 2010 National Junior Chess Champion, following victories during the competition at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Division's canteen on Old Hope Road last Sunday.

Ramsay copped the title after finishing with a perfect six points from six games, including a win over two-time defending champion, National Master Damion Davy.

Davy, who is also at UWI studying actuarial sciences, had to settle for second place this time around, after ending on 4.5 points.

Third place went to the newest junior chess sensation, 14-year-old Damani Reid of Ardenne High, who scored four points, which included a good win over one of the pre-tournament favourites, Sahir Abbas, and a hard-fought draw with the defending champion, Davy.

Calabar High's Shreyas Smith and Ardenne's Jonathan Orgill, who both ended on 3.5 points to share fourth place, completed the top five.

Six players shared sixth place with three points each. They are Sahir Abbas, St Catherine High's Nathan Hinds, Campion College's Andrew Folkes, Miguel Asher of Wolmer's Boys and Ardenne High's Horace Sinclair and Twae-Jordan Rose.

Boasting the top two finishers, the UWI Chess Society was adjudged the top Chess Club, followed by the Chess Whiz Kids Chess Club, which trains both the third-place and fourth-place finishers.

The top school was Ardenne High.
