Delhi, India:

Moments after news broke that a bomb threat had been issued on the Commonwealth Games Village here in Delhi, India, yesterday evening, chef de mission of the Jamaican contingent, Major Desmon Brown, has echoed the assurances of Dehli police chief Rajan Bhagat that the incident was a childish hoax.

Bhagat told journalists that traces led them to a 16-year-old boy, who reportedly made the call from his cellphone claiming that a bomb was placed inside the Games Village, which houses approximately 7,000 athletes and officials.

Concerned

Brown and his management team have apparently been flooded with calls from concerned parents and families of a number of team members. However, he assured that the athletes and management feel extremely safe in India and that there is nothing to worry about.

"We have no knowledge of any bombs and after making several checks we have been assured that everything is in order and neither the athletes nor the management feels that there is any threat," said Brown. "We feel extremely safe here."

Bomb disposal teams and dog squads conducted search operations inside the Village yesterday, but no evacuations were ordered.

More than 100,000 police and military personnel have been put on duty in India's capital for the Games, with special focus on The Games Village and sporting venues.

There was certainly no indication of any threat inside the Village when The Gleaner visited yesterday, as athletes and officials went about their business in a regular fashion.
