Kerry Moxam, Miss Jamaica World 2010 first runner-up, will represent Jamaica in the Miss Intercontinental contest to be held in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on November 7, 2010.

In response to an invitation from the organisers to send a Jamaican representative, the Spartan Health Club has decided that Moxam would be the perfect ambassador for the country.

"We have been getting invitations for months for the Miss Intercontinental competition and the Miss Continental Earth, and we decided that we were going to focus on the Miss World pageant, but since we had such a strong first princess, we decided to give it a shot this year, a first in over 20 years," said Dr Terri-Karelle Reid, pageant director.

MaxBrown's, a popular boutique located at Carlos' Café on Belmont Road, will outfit Moxam for the event. A stage gown and a national costume from Uzuri International will also be included in her wardrobe.

23-y-o UWI graduate

Moxam, a 23-year-old University of the West Indies graduate, recently completed a first degree in psycho-logy and political science.

In addition to being the first runner-up in the Miss Jamaica World pageant, Moxam also copped the competition's Beach Beauty title.

Famed Jamaican beauty (Miss Jamaica Universe 1989; Miss Jamaica World 1991), Sandra Foster, won the Miss Intercontinental Contest in 1990 when it was held in Lagos, Nigeria.

Moxam said she was very excited about the competition.

"I believe that I am good a ambassador for Jamaica and the World Beauty Organisation (organisers of the Miss Intercontinental contest) being that I am from a mixed background and from Jamaica, a country that has such a diverse culture," said Moxam.

More than 60 countries have been invited to take part in the November 7 competition.

Not really nervous

"I'm not really nervous about the competition as yet, although a wise person once told me that being nervous is a good thing. It's been over 20 years since Jamaica last entered, and I must express appreciation to Mickey Haughton-James and Terri-Karelle Reid for seeing the potential in me and affording me this opportunity."

Moxam learnt of the decision for her to represent Jamaica two weeks ago, and has since changed gears to prepare for her October 25 departure.

"After the Miss World competition, I kind of slacked off in the gym, so I had to restart," said Moxam.

The layoff doesn't mean she is out of shape, however, as, according to Moxam, "I'm even more toned now than when I won beach beauty, so I'm more confident," she giggled.
