Tribute for Chen at Dover meet
Though it has been a decade since he died in a helicopter crash, more tributes are in order for Alfred Chen.
"On Monday, October 18, we will honour Alfred Chen at our Heroes Day race meet at the Dover raceway, St Ann," said president of the Jamaica Race Drivers' Club (JRDC), Hilary Jardine.
Jardine said the drivers will complete a lap of honour around the 1.4-mile long track prior to the start of the event. He said there will also be a commemorative trophy.
"It will be called the Alfred Chen Memorial Trophy and will be a permanent feature of the October staging of the race calendar. The criterion for winning the trophy is 'winner of three consecutive races or five liens'," said Jardine.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Olivia 'Babsy' Grange remembered Chen as a dedicated person to motor racing.
"He was so dedicated that he built Dover raceway on his property in 1988. He put his money where his mouth is and his legacy lives on," Minister Grange said.
Richard 'Dickie' Crawford says Chen had a vision for motorsport.
"He brought organisation and competition to the sport. His dream was to always build a race track, which he did," Crawford said.
While preparing for the event, the JRDC is mourning the loss of another colleague. Former motor-cyclist Lucien Tai Tenn Quee died peacefully on September 27.
Tai Tenn Quee represented Jamaica in regional champion-ships. He was also the former head of the University of the West Indies campus' security. A thanksgiving service was held for him last Friday at the St Margaret's Church in St Andrew.
