With several new attractions aimed at increasing its excitement level, the third renewal of the Rose Hall Triathlon & Multi Sports Festival, slated for October 23 and 24, is geared towards increasing its global recognition as one of the top 100 marathons in the world.

Speaking at the launch in Montego Bay, the event's director, Ryan Russell, CEO of Entertain Jamaica, said the triathlon, which is geared towards developing a world-class sporting event for local and international athletes, has expanded immensely in its three years.

"In just three years, we are now globally recognised," said Russell, a former top-flight local tennis player. "The venue is unmatched tropical paradise and that is a part of the appeal it has had on the acclaimed triathletes who have participated in this event."

The main part of the triathlon, which will be on October 24, will feature defending champion Nicholas Becker of France in the high endurance event comprising a 1,500 metres swim, 40k bike ride and a 10k run. The swim will take place off the coastline at Iberostar, the bike ride along the North Coast Highway and the run along on the scenic Cinnamon Hill Golf Course.

"Over the years we have had quality triathletes, like Becker, Olympian Isabelle Ferrer and the Australian husband and wife duo of Greg and Laura Bennett," said Russell. "We are now rated second in the subcategory of the 'Best Vacation Triathlon'."

Regarding the new addition, which has a local focus, the events are the Sunshine Kids Triathlon, the North Coast Bike Ride, the Lightening 5K Run and the Rose Hall Open Ocean Swim, which will be targeting corporate companies, triathlon participants, sporting organisations, gyms and high school students.

As part of its health and wellness component, a seminar showcasing nutrition, healthy lifestyle and training techniques will be held at the Rose Hall Hilton Resort on the first day (October 23).

The event, which is slated to feature over 50 high schools, will include presenters such as Olympian Dennis Johnson, international triathlete Iona Wynter and Vaughn Phang, president of the Jamaica Cycling Federation.

"It should be a fantastic experience as it will give some of our local athletes a chance to compete against international stars," said Rudy Robinson, vice-president of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association. "We fully endorse this event and will be giving it all the support we can."
