Below are edited excerpts from comments posted online at www.jamaica-gleaner.com by readers to yesterday's front page story, 'PM urged to stand up for free press'.

Dig deeper

As it stands right now, the press is barely scratching the surface of all the irregularities of this government. Everald Warmington really has the gall to say anything. The media should truly start investigating these people in public office.

Sauce for the goose ...

It is shocking that the press that complains whenever its feelings gets hurt does its best to stifle opinions with which it does not agree.

Warmington is right

For once Warmington was right. He might be a ranting maniac at the best of times but he is right on this issue of the media making up news where there is none, blatantly dipping in sensationalism and misleading headlines and impatiently touting stories that they did not bother to investigate properly.

Instead of attacking Warmington, pick the sense out of his ranting. I have had the same issue with news agencies in Jamaica, especially when it comes to people's reputation. The facts are not checked. It smacks of yellow belly journalism. I say, train your reporters.

As for the alternative route to air his grouse, letters to the editor do not have the same kind of impact as a glaring headline on the front page of a paper, so that route is not as effective.

The people's watchdog

Someone needs to remind Warmington that in a democracy, the fourth estate is democracy's watchdog, and not the Government's nor the JLP's lapdog. This is and should always be the case. Anything less and the media have not only failed itself but also the wider society.

If Warmington fails to fully grasp this concept then he needs to go, period.
