Humble Lion added yet another chapter to Village United's miserable season yesterday afternoon when they clipped the Trelawny-based team 1-0 in their Digicel Premier League fixture at the Elliston Wakeland Youth Centre, in Falmouth.
However, amidst Humble Lion's joy, there was some amount of sadness, as they lost Zico Herrera to a broken leg in the 86th minute after a tackle by Village United's Dino Williams, who was red-carded for the foul.
The win for Humble Lion came courtesy of a well-executed goal by the speedy Kevin Mighty midway the second half. However, he was guilty of a few missed chances in the first half.
The win for Humble Lion, their second under new coach Lenworth Hyde, has lifted them out of the relegation zone as they have now moved up to eight points. Village United, who were losing for the fifth time in nine games, have dropped into the relegation zone. They remain on six points.
"We are putting in the work and the players are responding, so we are pleased with the result," said coach Hyde, who has now secured seven points in his three games in charge. "We are just trying to keep the players focused with a few of getting them to believe in themselves.
Lacklustre pace
The game started at a somewhat lacklustre pace but it was Humble Lion that got the first chance in the 12th minute. They missed another chance in the 24th minute when Ajuran Brown fired wide from close range.
Midway the half, Village missed two good chances. In the 22nd minute, they should have scored when Orlando McBayne got away before the goal, but he fired wide. In the 27th minute, Williams crossed perfectly to Teofore Bennett, but he lost out in a challenge with the goalkeeper.
The second half started with Humble Lion missing a glorious chance when Mighty broke clear before the goal and fired wide. Seven minutes later, Humble Lion again came close when Denzil Watson went clear but fired straight at the goalkeeper.
With Humble Lion in full control, they took the lead in the 73rd minute. Mighty went down the left flank, turned inside neatly and cracked a powerful grounder past goalkeeper Elvis Hart, making the score 1-0.
