Former champions Cornwall College got off to an encouraging start in the western leg of the 2010 ISSA/KFC schoolboy basketball competition, when their Under-16 and Under-19 teams both registered good wins in Monday's opening games at Montego Bay Cricket Club.

In the first game of the Under-16 double-header, the Sheldon Pearson-coached Cornwall College were silky smooth in scoring an emphatic 59-16 win over Spot Valley High, while in the second game, Herbert Morrison had a good 56-43 win over Holland High.

In the lone Under-19 match, Cornwall's seniors brushed aside Spot Valley 69-52 in a game they dominated, but fell prey to too many turnovers.

In the Under-16 game against Spot Valley, Cornwall led from start to finish, taking all four quarters in the process. Romain Hinds was the outstanding player for the victorious team, knocking down 23 points, snatching six rebounds and providing four assists. Kevin Badori supported well with six points.

Kyle Shields was the top player for Spot Valley, getting 10 points and four rebounds. However, he never had quality support from his teammates.

In the Herbert Morrison-Holland game, the victors were well served by Daniel Henry and Clifton Sheetworth. Henry got 30 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals, while Sheetworth got 15 points and five assists.

Gian Gray, who played with great intensity to score 10 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, was the best of the Holland players.

Cruising

In their Under-19 game, veteran players Christopher Smith and Obrian Williams did the damage for Cornwall as they cruised past Spot Valley. Smith scored 29 points and had 14 rebounds, while Williams got 14 points. Tevin Brown, with 16 points and Nicholas Smith, 12, emerged the top performers for Spot Valley.

The competition will continue this afternoon with four games, two at Rhodes Hall High School and two at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.

At Rhodes Hall, the home team will meet Muschett in an Under-16 game while Manning's will battle Muschett in an Under-19 fixture, while at the Montego Bay Cricket Club, Cornwall will battle Holland in an Under-16 game, followed by Cornwall College against Maldon in an Under-19 game.
