Second Regional Advocates Caribbean Conference to convene
More than 50 legal professionals from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua, St Lucia, Guyana, Jamaica and other English-speaking territories are expected to meet from November 5 to 7 at the Knutsford Court Hotel, Kingston, for the Second Regional Advocates Caribbean Conference under the theme 'Truth and the Nation'.
The event is to be hosted by Advocates Caribbean, in association with The Lawyers' Christian Fellowship of Jamaica.
Attorney-at-law and pastor of the popular Swallowfield Chapel in Kingston, David Henry, will be the guest speaker at the gala dinner on Friday, November 5. He is expected to speak on the theme 'Truth and the Nation'. He takes the position that truth, the standard by which right and wrong are evaluated, supersedes poli-tical, economic, social or cultural considerations and impacts every dimension of national life. Henry will also comment on the role that Christians are to play as truth speakers and truth models in their society.
Speakers
Among the other regional and international speakers at the weekend conference will be Piero Tozzi, senior legal counsel for Global Alliance for Defence Fund, USA, who will make a presentation on 'Truth and Human Rights' at the Plenary Session on Saturday, November 6. Other speakers during the five break-out sessions that day will include Justice Alice Soo, judge of the Court of Appeal of Trinidad and Tobago, who will address the issue of 'Truth and the Advocate' and Carla Soverall, attorney-at-law, Trinidad and Tobago, who will speak on the matter of 'The Truth Behind Discrimination Law: The Constitution and Equal Opportunity Legislation'.
However, among the most anticipated sessions will be the one focussing on 'The Truth Behind Abortion', with presenters Hyacinth Griffith, Jamaican attorney-at-law; Roma Paul, attorney-at-law of Trinidad and Tobago and local advocates of pro-life Dr Wayne West and wife Dr Doreen Brady-West. Drs Brady-West and West have been advocates of the anti-abortion stance, working together with the Shirley Richards and members of the Lawyers Christian Fellowship of Jamaica to lobby government on the Bill now before the houses of Parliament for debate and ratification.
