Coach of Village United, Chris-topher Russell, praised his team for their hard-fought 1-0 victory over St Georges Sports Club in a Digicel Premier league match on Wednesday.
Graeme Green scored the winner in the 38th minute.
"We spoke about giving the best performance on the field," he said. "The players now understand that they have to fight for what they really want, and we saw just that in this Village team today. They were running, the passes were excellent, and it is good to see that the guys actually believe in themselves," Russell said.
In a matchup involving cellar teams Village were on the attack early through Green, Oliver Trail, and Troy Smith. Georges, however, came close to scoring in the 15th minute when national defender Jermaine Taylor's 35-yard shot forced goalkeeper Elvis Hart to dive full stretch to his right in making the save.
Village broke the deadlock seven minutes from half-time when Green's right-foot shot went in after grazing the right post. The second half saw both teams enjoying good attacks but were both denied by outstanding goal-keeping at both ends.
Losing coach Braxton Hyre said a lack of preparation is plaguing his team and, as a result, it has led to their demise.
"We are not prepared for this type of football, " he said. "The best training session we had was on Tuesday, and not much was accomplished. We were running on tired legs in the second half. The Village team was prepared, and it was quite clear as they came running at us from all angles," Hyre said.
