Super-sub Keyes on target for Waterhouse
Anthony Minott, Gleaner Writer
Second-half substitute Peter Keyes is relishing his super-sub status, after his late strike Wednesday night gave Waterhouse a 1-0 win over Portmore United in a Digicel Premier League match at the Ferdie Neita Park in Braeton. This pushed Waterhouse into the first end-of-round final.
"It is a great feeling for me scoring my first goal of the season and sending Waterhouse into the end-of-round final. I have been working hard all season and is it a joy to represent this club. We are like a family, we eat and drink together ... ," Keyes said after the victory.
With the win, Waterhouse moved to 22 points from 10 games, while Portmore remained on 16 points.
Keyes, a former Boys' Town player, unlocked Portmore's defence as he slotted home Weston Forrest's cross in time added on to shock Portmore's fans.
Missed chances for p'more
Portmore had their chances. The home team's top striker, Steven Morrissey, missed a sitter in the 65th minute, a glancing header that went a few centimetres wide of the right upright. Portmore received a big blow in the 72nd minute as young talent Tramaine Stewart was shown a red card by referee Dave Peterkin for stamping on Waterhouse's Akeem Steadman.
Waterhouse's assistant coach, Marcel Gayle, said it was mission accomplished. "We have achieved our first objective of the season, which is to reach the first end-of-round final. It was a disciplined game by the players. We started out slowly but we gradually improved our performance and won the game at the end."
