Western Bureau: Eight-time champions Rusea's continued to advertise themselves as one of the teams to beat in the 2010 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday afternoon when they started their campaign in Group Two of the inter-zone round with a big 4-0 win over Spot Valley at Jarrett Park.
However, while Rusea's were enjoying themselves at Jarrett Park behind goals from Brian Brown (2), Anthony Walker and Ramon Foster, defending champion St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) were forced to share points with Spalding after they ended 0-0 in their Group Four fixture at Brooks Park in Mandeville.
In other games involving the fancied teams, former champions Glenmuir were ruthless against St Thomas Technical, spanking them 4-0 in their Group Five fixture at York Oval in St Thomas. Clarendon College clipped Grange Hill 1-0 in their Group Four game at Jamalco while St James High upstaged Frome Technical 2-1 in their Group One game at the Frome Sports Ground in Westmoreland.
In other games, the exciting Lennon blanked Manning's 3-0 in their Group Three game at Jamalco, Garvey Maceo clipped beaten Ben Francis KO finalists Paul Bogle 1-0 in their Group Six game at York Oval; Titchfield surprised Old Harbour 1-0 at Carder Park in their Group Six game; Buff Bay and Charlemont ended 1-1 in their Group Five game at Carder Park while St Mary Technical and Brown's Town ended 0-0 in their Group Two game at High Gate in St Mary.
In the game at Jarrett Park, the Rusea's team never allowed Spot Valley to settle, putting them under pressure from the opening whistle. Rusea's took the lead in the 13th minute when Brown pounced on a cross on the edge of the goal area and nodded home powerfully, making the score 1-0.
Lead doubled
With Rusea's having things all their way, they doubled their lead in the 33th minute. What looked like a harmless cross from Walker ballooned over the head of the Spot Valley custodian and landed in the back of the net, making the score 2-0.
With time running out in the half, the rampant 'Russians' struck for a third time in the 39th minute. Foster pounced on a superb cross from Terito Gregory and calmly slotted home, making the half-time score 3-0.
In the second half, Rusea's seal the issue when Jermaine Woozencraft cracked the Spot Valley defence with a deft dribble and send Brown clear. His fierce grounder gave the goalkeeper no chance, making the final score 4-0.
