Morrissey eyes golden boot
Portmore United's leading striker, Steven Morrissey, wants to be the top goalscorer in this year's Digicel Premier League.
He took a step to realising that goal after he struck a brace to lead his team to a come-from-behind
Morrissey now has six goals from 12 matches, a big improvement from the one goal he scored last season.
Morrissey cites a better preseason as the main reason he is now hitting the target.
"This was a better preseason for me, and I'm now targeting 20-plus goals. My expectations are high for this season considering that we have a good bunch of players," Morrissey told The Gleaner after the match.
Morrissey's goals came in the 36th and 51st minutes, while Craig Foster netted Reno's goal, a superb effort that beat goalie Dwayne Kerr in the 31st minute.
The win saw Portmore jump to 20 points, while the Westmoreland-based Reno remained on 14 points.
Reno had the better of play in the opening minutes of the game, stringing a number of passes together, and scored through Foster, but lost the ascendancy when Portmore equalised. After that, they looked a shadow of themselves.
Five minutes into the second half, Ricardo Cousins pierced Reno's defence with a 30-metre pass that Morrissey latched on to and placed his kick past Reno's custodian, Gavin Barrett. It proved to be the winning strike.
Portmore's coach, Linval Dixon, thought it was a good performance by the team. "We scored two goals and that is good. They scored against us in the first half and we made some adjustments, and we kept possession of the ball and started playing them 'high' and it worked for us. Hopefully, we can keep this up."
