I'll be back - Boyd
André Lowe, Senior Staff Reporter
Tivoli Gardens marksman Navion Boyd is not used to sitting on his team's bench, but that is exactly where he was on Sunday as the west Kingston-based outfit made light work of Benfica in their Digicel Premier League (DPL) match at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.
Last year's league MVP has been sidelined in recent weeks with a shoulder injury after a collision with a St Georges United player in a first-round match. He, however, made his presence felt as he joined his teammates on the bench in support.
In truth, the national representative has not been missed by his club; since his injury, Tivoli Gardens have racked up impressive wins on their way to the first end-of-round title and continued their frightening form on Sunday, dismissing Benfica by 5-0.
"This shows how strong Tivoli Gardens is right now, we have a very good team," said Boyd who went on to highlight his team's depth and wealth of talent.
Great sign
"Its very important to all of us and it is a great sign that the team have been playing as well as they are right now," Boyd added. "With my injury, if they were doing badly, it would have seemed that the team is a one-man team, but the results show that Tivoli Gardens is a well-rounded team which is full of quality and players who are ready to step up at any time."
It is this assurance that has helped to make things a little more bearable for the former Wolmer's High student, as he faces another three weeks out of action.
"I am three weeks away from recovery and I'm looking forward to getting back," said Boyd. "Honestly, right now it's not that difficult to sit it out because the team is performing really well, so it's kind of easy for me to concentrate on taking my time to recover. I really miss playing but seeing things go as well as they are makes things easier for me."
The striker described the injury as the worst setback that he has had in all his years of competitive football and is definitely hoping that it will be last time that he will have to go through anything like this again.
"This is the biggest injury I have ever suffered since I have been playing football, it's just my time to get an injury, I guess, so I'm just focused on getting some rest and getting back in shape," said Boyd. "Also, there is no mental or psychological issue there right now, everything is good, I just want to get fit and ready again."
"I want to recover as quickly as possible so that I can go back to doing what I love to do," he reiterated.
