Sts Peter & Paul Prep school won the first Inter-Prep Schools' Karate Tournament, which took place at Meadowbrook Community Centre on Saturday.

Sts Peter & Paul were overwhelming in title challenge, flooring all before them to accumulate 231 points, a whopping 118 more than second-placed Liberty Learning Centre (Portland), who ended with 103. Third went to Hillel Prep (58), while Vaz Prep (53) and Morris Knibb Prep (41) rounded out the top five.

Over 175 students from 14 schools participated in the event, competing in age categories from four and under to 11-12 years.

Areas of competition

The areas of competition were individual, team and weapon katas (patterns), and kumite (sparring).

Brian Chambers of Sts Peter & Paul emerged champion boy, while Vaz Prep's Dayna Turner earned the champion girl award.

Hillel Prep, which fielded the smallest team, were given special commendations for having done "exceedingly well".

Other participating schools were St Andrew Prep, St Cecilia Prep, Portmore Missionary Prep, Stella Maris Prep, Porter Centre, Queen's Prep, Wolmer's Prep, Amy Bailey Model Basic School and Mona Prep.

Sensei Lola King, who is the karate teacher at Sts Peter & Paul, said next year's event should be bigger and better with more schools and the addition of more categories. These will include musical katas and a broader range of weapons katas.

Chairperson of the sports committee at Sts Peter & Paul Prep, Mrs Jacqueline Gordon-Martin, gave a special thank you to the major corporate sponsor of the event, McKay Security.
