The governor's salary

Published:Friday | November 26, 2010 | 12:00 AM

It seems odd that having taken a year to negotiate a contract that he said wouldn't have the flaws of the previous incumbent, Finance Minister Audley Shaw couldn't this week give the full salary of the present central bank governor, Mr Brian Wynter.

He therefore promised opposition members of parliament that he would return to the House sometime in the future with the details and other fine print.

Nobody, we believe, would begrudge Mr Wynter a salary at market rates and requisite to his skills. But Mr Shaw would understand if some were to perceive reticence and red herring, especially when the administration was so willing to be "transparent" over what it declared to be the gravy train for former governor, Mr Derick Latibeaudiere.

Mr Shaw must come clean, quickly.
